MFT Sketch Challenge #378: Sweet Sloths

Hi friends! Today I have a one-layer card that uses masking, ink blending, and no-line coloring techniques.

For this card, I used the Sweet Sloths stamp set from My Favorite Things. I am obsessed with sloths, btw. They always seem so happy!

Anyway, I started off by creating a square mask using some scrap paper and a square die. I folded the paper in half to get my center line and then lined up the die and traced the inside of it, and then cut the square out with scissors. I tossed the square and used the negative space as my mask. Then I taped the mask down onto a pre-trimmed piece of kraft cardstock and stamped my sloth image. I stamped it again onto some masking paper so that I could protect my sloth from the ink blending I was about to do.

I first blended white pigment ink and then blended Broken China distress oxide ink using the mini cloud edges stencil (see supply list at the end for links).  I used a white colored pencil (Caran D’ache Luminance) to fill in the spaces that I missed with the ink blending.

Then I colored the sloth, branch, and flowers with Polychromos colored pencils (see the last photo for a color list). I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but sloths are pretty hairy, so I added longer strokes of the pencils to create his fur coat. Polychromos keep their points sharper longer than Prismacolors, but I still had to sharpen to get a proper fur texture. The Polychromos white isn’t great, so I used the Caran D’ache white pencil instead. I thought the sloth looked lonely, so I drew in two more branches and foliage to fill the frame a bit more.

After I was done coloring, I removed the mask and added the sentiment underneath the image. I adhered the panel to a piece of craft foam trimmed to be just smaller than the panel, and adhered that to my top-folding A2 card base.
