SSS Wednesday Challenge: Texture

I decided I wanted to play along with the Simon Wednesday Challenge this week, where the theme was “add some texture”. But I don’t have much in the way of stencils and paste and I was struggling with how to add texture beyond embossing. I thought, maybe I could imply texture with alcohol inks, maybe add some foil, but my experiments just weren’t hitting the mark.

Then, just before dinner the other night, a lightbulb went off: I could use felt…no! Wait! Needle felting! And then I tore apart my craft studio searching for my neglected needle felting supplies. This. Had. To. Happen.

Does that happen to you? That feeling where you just absolutely have to drop everything and pursue an idea before it floats away? Sometimes I just sit and stare at my desk searching for ideas, and other times they knock me over and demand attention.

Anyway, so here’s my card. I used the Cloud Nine die set from Mama Elephant. It is such a sweet, sweet set with lots of possibilities.

Techniques used for this card:

  • Die cutting
  • Needle felting

First, I die cut two clouds from off-white wool felt. Wool is important because it serves as a base for needle felting. And needle felting requires wool and friction so fibers can wrap around each other and create shapes and texture. I grabbed my big foam felting block, some off-white roving, and my felting needles and set to work, jabbing at tufts of wool to create fluffiness.

I wanted the cloud to poke through the card from the inside, so I die cut the cloud again from a piece of whipped cream card stock that I previously ran through my machine with the stitched border die from the set. Then I placed that panel over my card base and traced the outline of the cloud onto the base so I knew where to place the die.  Once both layers were cut (the flat panel and the top portion of the folded base), I adhered the cloud in place on the inside, using the hole as my guide.

At that point, I realized my cloud needed details, so I carefully added eye lines and blush. Pro-tip: don’t wait until your card is assembled to add details – it’s tricky to needle felt without piercing the paper too.

I grabbed some scrap cardstock in a rainbow assortment and die cut large raindrops to go onto the front of the card. I popped a few of them up with foam tape.

I will say, this is probably not a card that will go through the mail without extra postage and padding. That is, if you can stop petting it long enough to actually part with it.
