WCMC9 #20: Spring

Spring? What’s that? In my neighborhood, spring has been very elusive. I’m pretty sure it was snowing when I made the card I am sharing with you today. But you know, if you can’t have flowers outside, make some flowers inside!

To make the floral background, I used the accent flowers from the Wonderful Floral stamp set from Concord & 9th. Starting in the middle(ish) of a piece of smooth bristol paper (trimmed to A2), I stamped the flowers, leaves, and other foliage stamps in a “repeating” sort of pattern. It’s good to start in the middle and work your way out, alternating stamps as you go. That way you don’t work yourself into a corner. Kind of like mopping.

Normally, I would stamp everything first, and then color, but I kept accidentally overlapping my stamps because I was using light ink and my eyes just ain’t what they used to be. So I stamped a couple of images and colored them in, lather rinse repeat until I finished the background.

Traditional watercolors were eluding me for some reason, so instead I grabbed some water-activated markers: Distress Markers in Candied Apple and Worn Lipstick, Zig Clean Color Real Brush markers in bright yellow and green, and Tombow Dual Brush pen in a lighter green. I used water brushes to get that color moving around. I really like the resulting color palette. Very spring. It kind of reminds me of the magnolia trees that are currently blooming on my street (while it threatens to snow).

Once the panel was dry, I trimmed it a bit further using an A2-proportioned rectangle die (4×5.25″). I created a layering panel by first using the Friend Like You die (my number one favorite die from C9) – the new You’re My Happy set would work wonderfully here too. Then I positioned the lacy scalloped edge from the Select-a-Size Edge die set to create border along the top and bottom. I popped this layer up over the floral background using foam tape.

I hope this card gives you some ideas to bring spring to your card-making. I am playing this card in the Where Creativity Meets C9 challenge #20: Spring.
